NEW
HARTFORD -- Slocum-Dickson Medical Group is kind
of like one-stop shopping.
With
more than 50 physicians offering 25 specialities, residents
from the Mohawk Valley can come from near and far and
see all of their doctors under one roof, all in one
day.
"If
we have a patient who comes from Lowville in the middle
of winter, instead of having to go to different places,
we have everything here," said Slocum-Dickson Executive
Director Philip Porter. "We can do everything,
including X-rays, filling prescriptions. We offer a
broad array of services."
Drs.
Charles Dickson, William Dickson and Millard Slocum
formed the practice of Slocum-Dickson in 1938. Through
the practice, which opened at 258 Genesee St., the physicians
were able to realize economic benefits and improve the
quality of medical care received by their patients.
Sixty-five
years later, the practice has evolved to a large campus
offering everything from urgent care to digital mammography.
To
celebrate its anniversary, the medical center is offering
an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at its 1729 Burrstone
Road campus.
In
addition to its urgent care and family practice physicians,
Slocum-Dickson doctors offer a variety of specialities
including asthma, allergy and internal medicine; cardiovascular
diseases; dermatology and plastic surgery; endocrinology;
diabetes; gastroenterology; medical oncology; neurology
and neurosurgery; obstetrics, gynecology and infertility;
ophthalmology; orthopedic, spine, total joint surgery;
pediatrics, radiology; rehabilitation; and urology.
The
facility expanded 40,000 square-feet in 2001. It employs
more than 375 people.
"Even
though we're a smaller facility, we like to compare
ourselves to the Mayo Clinic ... and we've hit national
benchmarks in things like patient satisfaction and rehabilitation,"
he said.
All
of Slocum-Dickson's physicians are either board-certified
or board-certification eligible, Porter said.
"We've
become extremely picky about who we bring in,"
he said. "My acid test is, 'Would I send my mother
to this person?'"
Slocum-Dickson
also does clinical research and participates in medical
studies.
"What
gives us the unique ability to do this is that we have
so many physicians and we see more than 3,500 patients
a day," said Dr. James O'Malley, president of Slocum-Dickson's
board of directors. "So there's a huge clinical
database that can be tapped into."
The
public can learn more about Slocum-Dickson's services
at Sunday's Open House, which will feature free health
screenings, physician and staff presentations, children's
entertainment and refreshments. Admission is free.
