Chiropractic studies have their roots in ancient Egypt
Dec. 29, 2003

Q. What are the origins of chiropractic?

A. The history of adjusting or resetting the spine as a portal for health can be traced back to Egyptian times where there is evidence of “back walking” in historical records and findings. Modern chiropractic, however, has a more recent history, dating back to 1895. An academician by the name of D.D. Palmer theorized that the nervous system, as it travels through the spine, could be vulnerable to stresses or pressure as it exits the spine as nerve roots. Dr. Palmer reasoned that since every function carried out by the body uses the nervous system as a communication pathway, any interference in this pathway could cause havoc to one’s health.

Palmer tested his theory on a gentleman named Harvey Lillard, who had lost his hearing several years earlier after injuring his neck. While palpating Lillard’s neck and upper back, Palmer felt a “bump” in his spine that was thought to be a bone out of place. Palmer used two hands to thrust on the bone in an attempt to “set it in place.” After the third day of adjusting Lillard’s spine, an amazing thing happened. The “bump” in his neck had disappeared and his hearing was restored. The first chiropractic adjustment actually freed a man from deafness by relieving the stress on his spine that was the cause of the problem.

Chiropractic has traveled a long, winding road since that time, enduring numerous attacks from other health-care professions and organizations to not only survive but also thrive as one of the fastest-growing health-care professions and to become the largest natural or drug-free health-care profession.
