Treatment may help children
Oct. 27, 2003

Q. While watching the evening news recently, I heard an osteopath explain how some forms of spinal manipulation can help ease ear infections in children. When the reporter asked if chiropractors do this type of manipulation, the osteopath said that chiropractic adjustments are “too rough” for children. This alarmed me since I take my child to a chiropractor. Was his comment true? I thought it was normal for chiropractors to work on children.

A. I have had several concerned patients ask me similar questions after watching the same news program. Since I did not see the program, I cannot respond directly to the osteopath’s actual comment, but I will add my own opinion on the subject.

Childhood ear infections usually respond well to chiropractic spinal adjustments of the neck. Trauma during the birthing process can lead to “subluxated” (out of place) neck vertebrae, which can irritate or partially close the Eustachian tubes of the ears, leading to infection. Spinal adjustments can remove the interference to the Eustachian tubes, allowing proper healing to occur.

Chiropractors work on young and old patients. However, like any health-care profession, some are specialists who narrow their scope of practice to certain demographics, which may not include working on children. Most “family” chiropractic offices do work with children.

You should have nothing to fear taking your child to a chiropractor for care. Chiropractors use very low force techniques on children, usually with no more pressure than one would press a finger into a tomato to check its ripeness. Ignorance and irresponsibility were probably the reasons for a certain osteopath to misinform the public.
