Various treatments available for scoliosis
July 28, 2003

Q. I am a 17-year-old female who was just diagnosed with scoliosis in my lower and middle back. My doctor says there is nothing to be done except monitor the condition. I am not happy with doing nothing. What can be done for scoliosis?

A. Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine more often seen in females that is commonly diagnosed at puberty. Scoliosis can be classified in two categories, structural and functional.

Structural scoliosis is usually caused by an underlying structural deformity or a neurological disorder and is often inherited. This type of scoliosis needs to be monitored closely due to its permanency and its tendency to worsen over time. Bracing and surgery are the most common traditional treatments, designed to prevent encroachment onto the delicate organs in the chest cavity.

Functional scoliosis tends to be caused by a leg length inequality or a disc herniation, which may cause a temporary sideways curve in the spine. Functional scoliosis tends to be less severe than structural and can usually be treated effectively by addressing the cause, such as by wearing a heel lift to equalize leg length.

It is important to find which category your scoliosis fits in. Most research shows that structural scoliosis cannot be reversed. However, symptomatic treatment for pain, nerve interference and a possible slowdown of the natural progression of scoliosis can be explored with chiropractic care, with its emphasis on spinal alignment, and a healthy lifestyle.
