Choose
to Move: Journal #8
Sept. 17, 2002
I
wrote this journal entry Friday, instead of my normal
Monday night because I went to the Poconos and was out
of town for my normal deadline.
Im
really looking forward to getting away and relaxing
with my friends from Utica College, Shavona Robinson
and Kristal (Rodriguez) Neal. I just recently reunited
with them and am excited that we will have another opportunity
to spend time together. Shavona was generous enough
to invite me to visit her time share.
Im
hoping to take advantage of the pool and whatever else
the place might offer to get in some physical activities.
Id also like to take a long walk and enjoy the
beautiful scenery.
This
will be an excellent time for me to get back into the
swing of things. I havent been exercising much
in the past couple of weeks because my feet have been
bothering me. The doctor said it might be plantar fasciitis,
which is inflammation of the plantar fascia, according
to (www.scoi.com),
the Web site of the South Carolina Orthopedic Institute.
The plantar fascia is a broad ligament-like structure
that extends from the heel bone to the base of the toes,
acting like a thick rubber band on the bottom arch of
the foot, the site says.
My
doctor said to give it two weeks and see how it feels.
The Web site said it can take up to a year to recover
completely!
Ive
been wearing sneakers everywhere, including to work
doctors orders. She said I need to give
my feet time to heal.
Im
not very happy about the fashion statement Im
making wearing dresses or dress pants and sneakers.
But as Patrick Calhoun, a physical therapist at Sitrin
Family of Services, said, Vanity has to disappear
when it comes to our health.
So
Ive been swallowing my pride and wearing my sneakers
even when I dont want to. My feet have been feeling
better, so it definitely seems to be working. I cant
promise, though, that I will wear sneakers for a year.
I will have to find alternatives because, Im not
proud to admit, eventually vanity will get the best
of me.
Hopefully
this weekend will give me the opportunity to relax,
have some fun and get myself motivated to start an exercise
routine before the cold weather hits. Maybe in the long
run, the exercise will help my feet heal.
