Choose
to Move: Journal #2
Aug. 6, 2002
I
seem to be taking baby steps toward exercising 30 minutes
per day, five days a week.
I’m not quite making that goal yet.
But I took the physical activity quiz from the program
and discovered I’m a “Mover,” which means I’m new to
physical activity. According to the quiz, my physical
activity goal should be to move for 15 minutes per day,
two to three times each week.
That goal seems a little more reasonable to me, knowing
my physical limitations. I also know I can do more if
I’d like, but now I won’t feel pressure to push myself
beyond my capabilities and end up getting injured.
I was a little discouraged when I walked for 30 minutes
Monday morning — my legs and feet were hurting. I felt
good for the first 15 minutes, but after that, it became
painful to walk.
The quiz had merit — obviously, it is important to start
slow and work into longer walks or workouts. It’s pointless
to force my body to work beyond its abilities and end
up not walking at all.
Before getting out of bed at 6 a.m. to walk, I followed
one piece of advice from the organizers — I bought a
good pair of walking shoes. I made sure to get a pair
that had good support because my feet had been bothering
me.
Another piece of advice was to buy a good sports bra.
Larger-busted women were advised to wear two of them
at a time for extra support.
The program organizers haven’t really talked about eating
habits, but I know I have to change mine. I made it
to the grocery store over the weekend and stocked up
on a lot of fruits and vegetables. I’m trying to stay
away from a lot of bread and pasta, which is very difficult
for someone who grew up with Thursday night spaghetti
night. My mom still makes pasta every Thursday.
I guess that means it’s time to stop depending on mom
and dad for dinner!
