Q:
I am a diabetic diagnosed about 14 years ago. Presently
my husband and I have health insurance which is a cobra
policy from his former employer. We will have to seek
new health insurance within a few months. What can I
expect to find from a new insurance company given my
preexisting condition? Where could I get more information
about insurance for diabetics?

A:
Insurance regulations are continually changing thanks
to pressure from consumers. There is no hard and fast
rule about insurance policies when there are pre-existing
conditions. Some insurance companies may choose not
to insure you at all, some may charge very high premiums
assuming you may be a high risk patient, and some may
pay benefits for your medical coverage excluding any
diabetic coverage for a certain period of time. Most
companies will have you sign a release of information
so they can contact your physician for a copy of your
medical records in order to evaluate the degree of management
you will require.
The
best course of action would be to start comparison shopping
for policies now while you have the luxury of time.
During these two months call various companies, ask
about their pre-existing coverage, and ask for their
literature to be sent to you. You can also call your
local hospital and speak to their billing department.
Ask the supervisor for a list of insurance companies
that she deals with the most. Also call your physician's
office and not only ask them about the companies most
commonly used in their practice, ask which health insurance
companies are easiest and best to deal with. There may
even be a state regulatory board that can offer you
some assistance.
