I
would like to know how to get help with prescription
drugs. My only income is from state retirement. By the
time I pay my mortgage and car note there is not enough
money for medicine. I had to resign from my job of twenty-five
years. Social security is pending. I would be grateful
for any information.
A:
There
are many hardship drug programs and plans available
for qualified patients. Many individual pharmaceutical
companies also offer reduced or free medications for
those financially eligible patients.
Oftentimes
your prescribing physician may be able to suggest which
programs you should look into. Your healthcare provider
confronts this affordability problem all of the time.
You are not alone. Because it is so important that their
patients take their medicine, doctors usually will be
aware of several programs that may help you. And, when
appropriate, be sure to inquire about generic medicine.
Your pharmacist may also be a helpful resource. He deals
with drug companies as well as the special programs
for reduced cost prescriptions all of the time. There
is also nothing wrong with going to several different
pharmacies. Do some comparison shopping. You might be
surprised by the prices.
