Salaries
low in medical billing field
Oct 7, 2004
Q:
I
recently bought a medical billing course which was offered
in the newspaper from a California company. They sent
me four video tapes and two books to learn medical billing.
After I found out that the videos were about how to
set up your own shop, I called them. I explained that
I can not set up my own shop. My husband is with the
military and we are still moving around. This company
told me I could find work in any hospital. They also
offered me full support and gave me a phone number to
call. I can not reach anyone at this number. So now
what do I do? Do I need to be certified to find a job
in this field? And how much does this job pay?
A:
I
receive similar questions to yours all of the time.
I have never understood how someone can learn medical
billing through a video or a book. I just don't get
it. I also wonder about the difference in costs between
the package you bought and taking a certified medical
billing course.
Becoming certified in this field is always a plus and
certainly would give you an advantage. But it is not
absolutely necessary. Many people become excellent medical
billers with on the job training. Many medical billing
departments are quite willing to hire inexperienced
people for entry level positions. You will receive the
hands on training that will help make you proficient
in this field. And, like most jobs, the more you work...the
better you will get.
I
can not give you a pat answer on medical billers' salaries.
There are just too many variables to factor in. A hospital
is going to pay differently than a doctor's office,
and different cities and locations are not going to
pay the same. There are also many different kinds of
billing positions and levels of jobs. But I can tell
you one thing. If you want to get rich, your chances
are better winning the lottery.
