Patients
responsible for money mistakenly returned to them

Q:
Am
I liable for monies sent to me by the hospital which
they had received from my insurance company? Two years
ago I received a check from the hospital and now I am
being told by the hospital that the insurance company
wants the money back. Am I responsible for paying back
the money or should the hospital be responsible since
they are the ones who sent me the check to begin with?
A:
It
sounds like the insurance company overpaid your hospital
bill. Instead of the hospital returning the overpayment
to the insurance company, they mistakenly sent you the
check. The insurance company audited their records and
is now requesting the overpayment to be returned to
them. The hospital does not have that overpayment. You
do. You need to give back the money.
You
may or may not have realized the mistake by the insurance
company and the hospital two years ago. But when you
generate a hospital bill it is because you are receiving
medical care. You usually don't receive money too. You
now know that money wasn't really intended for you.
When
you return the money to the hospital, be sure to ask
for a receipt indicating what that money is earmarked
for. You need this transaction to be accurately documented
so there will be no problems for you in the future.
