security behind 'M' status

Q:
I have the letter "M" behind my Medicare identification
number. What does it mean and can I get it changed?
A:
The letter "M" indicates that you are not
receiving social security checks. You probably have
not paid enough taxes over a ten year period to qualify
for social security benefits. However, you can purchase
parts A and B of Medicare on your own.
The
only way to change the "M" status would be
by working and paying social security taxes. Please
call your local social security office and confirm the
M status. They have all of the necessary information
and can look into your individual case.
