do I enroll in Medicare?

Q:
I have private medical insurance now. How do I go about
changing this if I want Medicare instead?
A:
Medicare has different enrollment periods depending
on your specific circumstances. If you did not sign
up for Medicare benefits when you turned 65 there is
a specific General enrollment period. Call your local
social security office to confirm the dates. It is also
possible that the cost for Part B coverage may be higher
if you did not take Part B when you were eligible. However,
there are exceptions to this. Your social security office
will be able to help you.
There
are Special enrollment periods to sign up for Medicare
if you are still working and have coverage through your
employment, if your employer plan coverage ends or your
employment ends or if you are disabled and working.
Your Medicare premiums would not be higher under these
circumstances.
Again,
call your local social security office. They have all
of the information including eligibility rules and will
guide you through the process of obtaining Medicare
coverage.
